Located in Derrick Hall 238 from 12:00 - 12:55 pm

Fall 2009 -

  • September 11:  Alejandra Sorto, Texas State University, “The Statistical Performance in a Comparative Study Between Central American Teachers”
  • September 18:  Sharon Strickland, Texas State University, “Math Majors and Teachers: What's the difference and why should I care?”
  • September 25:  Alexander White,Texas State University, “Data looking for a context:  A Statistics Opening day Icebreaker activity.”
    Abstract:
As the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education state, “Statistical problem-solving is heavily reliant upon context.”  It is not possible to give plausible interpretations of data without some knowledge of the context that generated them.  However, in many cases context overshadows the data.  Beginning students often use prior knowledge of the context to reach conclusions without paying attention to the data at all.  In this talk, I will present a icebreaker activity that focuses on the role of context and data.  The activity is sufficiently rich to set the stage for many statistical concepts including distribution, the role of the question in data collections, and the distinction between categorical and quantitative data.
