Placement to Guidance

How does the placement to guidance work?

Students often come to the Center for Mathematics Readiness and ask "Where do I go?"

Pathways

This is not an easy question to answer.

The position of the Center for Mathematics (CMR) is that several indicators should be used to determine a student’s mathematics coursework entry point.

There are many indicators that can be used to assess a student's mathematical profile.  The indicators that the Center for Mathematics Readiness considers the most telling are:

Student Binder

  1. TSI / THEA Scores
  2. LASSI Scores
  3. MARS Scores
  4. SAT / ACT Scores
  5. CMR College Exam
  6. Grade Point Average
  7. Mathematics History
  8. TSI Status Read / Write
  9. Personal Interviews

The indicators are used create a student profile and provide them with guidance towards an optimal mathematics course(s) trajectory. It is like setting up a comprehensive binder with all of their mathematics scores and history that comes together to form an individualized mathematics profile unique to a specific student.  This gives us the depth of understanding about where a student stands in their mathematics journey and allows us provide students with better guidance.

Every individual indicator tells us something specific and unique about a student. Once these diagnostic indicators have been reviewed, then we will be able to tell the student the Level of Readiness and guide them in the right direction.  The combination of multiple indicators into a profile will determine if a student is ready for FOCUS, College Algebra, or even Calculus.
